The fans have spoken and they do play favorites — Sgt. Olivia Benson from Law & Order: SVU is America’s favorite female TV character.
The study was conducted by marketing agency Trailer Park, and the results were surprising to the firm’s head of integrated strategy, D’nae Kinglsey. Olivia Benson was a favorite across demographics including men/women and age groups.
She was favored by a wide margin over Cookie Lyon from Empire, Olivia Pope from Scandal and Alicia Florrick from The Good Wife, who we expected because there are more viewer and media conversations around those characters.
Kinglsey’s analysis of the data was that Benson’s character,
sits at the intersection of relatability, preferred traits for both men and women and favorite storyline for overall audiences. She is the sweet spot of content, context and culture.
There’s also the fact the Benson has been on television for 14 years – that’s 14 years of new shows and a lot of reruns. The Good Wife doesn’t hide the fact that it appeals to a smart audience not to mention they killed off a fan-favorite character —ahem Shonda, who was guilty of doing the same. While Grey’s Anatomy has been on for a close 11 seasons, they’ve taken some creative risks that haven’t paid off.
Plus there’s the fact that Olivia Benson is just a bad-ass!
